We are looking for an enthusiastic go-getter type individual that will lead the mechanical design of new high-end optical devices based on coherent transmission. The Sr. Staff Engineer will create and develop mechanical models addressing the optical, electrical, thermal, and mechanical requirements of high reliability components. Create the detailed 3D models and drawings within Solidworks. Review and analyze new designs with respect to various standards and thermo-mechanical requirements. Conduct modeling of the mechanical assemblies, along with empirical testing, to validate the thermal and mechanical performance. Design tools and test fixtures for the assembly and test of the components. Testing includes thermal management of the component and electrical contacts (DC/RF). Work with various vendors worldwide to achieve yield, cost, and manufacturability requirements.

  • Primary responsibility is design and development of fiber optic sub-assemblies, primarily 100 Gbit/s and higher with focus on coherent transmission.
  • Work closely with both internal and external suppliers to develop the necessary components (packages, substrates, flexes, PCBs, test fixtures) Support the overall development of the product with respect to mechanical and opto-mechanical design, and process development. Interface with internal customers, in both NPI and production organizations.
  • Must be strong in problem solving with excellent communication skills to interact with engineering staff, external vendors and contractors.

  • BS/MS/PhD in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • 3+ years of mechanical design experience.
  • Proficiency in 3-D modeling, specifically using Solidworks. Ideal candidate will also be skilled in thermal and mechanical FEA. Solid understanding of optical-mechanical design in the context of fiber optic packaging.
  • Knowledge of coherent transmission.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Familiarity with Agile a plus.
  • The candidate will be expected to do very limited travel within the US, as well as to Asia and Europe.
